Police shoot man in 3-hour standoff at Ctrain station
Police shot a man Wednesday at a Ctrain station Wafter Calgary officers were called to respond to reports of an armed passenger aboard one of the trains.
Calgary police said they heard from a transit employee at 1:40 p.m. that a man was seen on board a train with what appeared to be a weapon in his lap.
The train was stopped at the Sirocco station and police removed all passengers, city police said in a news release.
“A man matching the description was located in one of the cars and contained as the sole occupant after the evacuation of the other passengers,” said the release. “The Tactical Unit was called out and worked for a number of hours to try and safely resolve the situation.”
Police said the situation with the man escalated around 4:30 p.m. before a member of the tactical unit shot him. He was treated by a tactical EMS member and taken to hospital in serious condition.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called to investigate the shooting. The police watchdog confirmed its involvement in a tweet Wednesday afternoon, saying it had been directed to investigate the shooting.
Police said there was no evidence connecting this incident with a shooting in Crestmont that also occurred Wednesday.
The shooting occurred several hours after police confirmed they had received a report about the man on a Ctrain.
Calgary Transit had tweeted around 2:30 p.m. that the Sirocco station was closed.
Police said the station continued to be held for the ASIRT investigation and warned passengers to expect “significant delays.”
