Three homes severely damaged in blaze in N.W. neighbourhood
Several residents in the northwest community of Sherwood won't be able to return home after fire severely damaged three residences early Sunday morning.
Fire department crews arrived in the 100 block of Sherwood Crescent N.W. shortly after midnight to find two homes engulfed by flames, prompting a second alarm to be called. Three homes suffered significant damage in the fire.
A fourth home received minor damage to its siding and roof.
Residents of the affected buildings, who were able to escape before firefighters arrived, “will be displaced from their homes for an undetermined amount of time,” the Calgary Fire Department said in a written statement.
There were no injuries reported. Crews remained at the scene Sunday to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, while investigators continued to probe the cause of the blaze.
Dilyar Askar, who lives in the neighbourhood, said he heard sirens around midnight.
He said he went outside to see a lot of smoke and flames, and around a dozen fire trucks responding.
“This isn't really something that you think about until it happens. It's a bit surreal that it actually does happen,” said Askar.
“As soon as I got home, I made sure our fire extinguisher was in place and it wasn't expired or anything.”
He said he heard from neighbours that everyone is accounted for but that a family cat is missing.
Askar said he believes three houses will need to be demolished because of the damage they sustained, while at least one more will need minor repairs.
