Do you have a computer science diploma? Are you looking for ways to advance your career — and your education?

The team at the University of Lethbridge has a suggestion — and you don’t have to leave Calgary to pursue it.

This year, the university is expanding its popular Post-diploma Bachelor of Science — Computer Science Major program.

Starting in September, the 20-course program will be offered at the Calgary Campus.

A flexible degree program, it is aimed at adult learners and working professionals who want to step up their technical skills and take their careers to the next level.

“The new program will be a game changer in the Calgary market,” says Kristin Galicia, program specialist, academic adviser, acting campus manager for the University of Lethbridge’s Calgary Campus.

“We’re very excited to offer this opportunity to Calgarians, so that they can stay home in their own communities.”

Students can work while going to school and can also take advantage of career opportunities in their home city.

“Alberta is now home to 3,000 tech companies, a 233 per cent increase over the past 10 years,” Galicia says, citing a 2021 Alberta Enterprise Corp. study.

“And of that, almost 60 per cent of those companies are in Calgary.”

Applications are due now, and scholarships and other financial supports are available. The degree can be completed in as little as two years, and each student can create an individual course load that works for their life. Some may take one or two courses at a time, while others may opt to study fulltime, taking up to five classes at once.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for people who are or were working in oil and gas, and who now want to take advantage of the tech industry expansion in Calgary,” says Spencer Simkin, the student recruitment officer at the University of Lethbridge’s Calgary Campus.

“It really fills a niche for students who have already completed an approved diploma program and want to continue their educational pathway.”

Class sizes are typically between 20 and 40 students, and classes are in-person on evenings and weekends, with hands-on labs and other experiential opportunities, including paid co-op programs.

With this program, students can specialize in programming and applications, system development, network technology, digital and web design, consultation and installation, education and more, making them career-ready in any sector.

And while the post-diploma program may be new to Calgary, it is a well-established part of the University of Lethbridge’s main campus offerings.

“We are constantly looking to meet industry demand, to help ensure our graduates find employment when they finish school,” says Galicia. “It’s exciting for us, and it’s exciting for the students.”
