One person is dead after a vehicle veered off the road and struck a pedestrian at a bus stop in the Forest Lawn area on Sunday morning.

Police say they were called to the intersection of 17th Avenue and 36th Street S.E. around 9:30 a.m. for reports of a single-vehicle collision. A truck, travelling on 36th Street, went off the road and hit a bus shelter and a person standing inside just north of the intersection, according to police.

Despite resuscitation efforts, the 42-year-old male victim succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

The driver was taken into custody and transported to Foothills hospital with undetermined injuries. Police say investigators are still probing the cause of the crash.

“The speed limit on the section (of ) roadway is 50 kilometres an hour and early indications are that (the vehicle was travelling) well above that. At this time, I can't say how fast,” said Sgt. Colin Foster of the collision reconstruction unit.

“The driver is in custody based on what we do know, but obviously we want to firm that up one way or the other.”

Pieces of the glass bus shelter could be seen bloodied and strewn across the street on Sunday morning, about nine metres from where the structure once stood.

Leading up to the bus stop, several nicks and tire marks could be seen on the pavement and sidewalk leading toward a mangled truck sitting against a nearby building.

Mark Soliga, who lives just across the street from the scene, said his mother woke him up after she heard the loud bang outside. Looking outside, he saw multiple officers and paramedics trying to save the victim.

“There are like lots of accidents around this area, but in the bus stop, it was kind of terrible,” he said.

He said paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man for about 10 or 15 minutes before declaring him dead.

Police closed 36th Street between 16th and 18th avenues S.E. as they continued to investigate.

Police ask anybody with information about the incident to contact the CPS traffic section at 403428-4000 or the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
