Dozens of people marched Calgary streets on Sunday afternoon carrying blue and yellow balloons and flying Ukrainian and Canadian flags to show appreciation to Canadians for their support for Ukraine.

“Thank you, Canada,” the group chanted, as they walked from Poppy Plaza at the corner of Memorial Drive and 10th Street N.W., around several nearby streets before returning to Poppy Plaza.

“Glory to Ukraine,” they cheered in Ukrainian.

The war in Ukraine has displaced millions of people this year. Tens of thousands of them have found their way to Canada as part of a temporary residence program by the Canadian government. Many Canadians have helped Ukrainian newcomers and supported the war efforts in Ukraine.

As a thank-you to Canadians, and specifically locals, who have shown Ukrainians support, the group gathered on Sunday to hand out balloons to passersby, sing and chant their gratitude.

After crossing the Bow River, those marching paused for a moment of silence for the thousands lost in the war and the Ukrainian anthem was sung. They crossed back over the Bow River on the Peace Bridge, ending the march back at Poppy Plaza.

“We want to recognize the help that they've given already and ask for more help, as well. We want to thank Canadians for all that they have given to the Ukrainian community in Ukraine and in Canada,” said Michael Lindenbach, who organized the event with his wife, Viktoriya Samarina. “But we also want to remind people that it's not over and there's still a lot to be done. Ukraine needs our help.”

Using a megaphone, Lindenbach said the love and generosity of Ukrainians show no limits, and he called on Canadians to do what they can.

“Every little bit helps. From creating awareness to others, volunteering or helping the brave men and women that are defending their homeland, fighting for freedom every single day,” said Lindenbach.

Tetiana Kyrychenko came to Canada from Ukraine in 2014 and has been attending the rallies held locally in support of Ukraine since Russia invaded earlier this year.

“I'm here to tell Canadian people, thank you so much for supporting Ukrainian people and giving us the opportunity to be here in a safe place,” said Kyrychenko.

“They feel how Canadians have supported them, helped them, and it's made them braver.”

She held a large Canadian flag with her friend, Marina Shugaeva, who came to Canada from Moscow, Russia, years ago but has been vocal in support of Ukraine's efforts.

“I support Ukraine,” said Shugaeva. “I ask all Canadians to continue to support and help Ukraine. They need peace. The killing of women and children during this conflict is not normal.”
