Westjet unveils flights from Calgary to Iceland in 2024
Westjet announced Wednesday it will soon offer direct flights from Calgary to Iceland.
The airline also said it is enhancing its 787 Dreamliner hub, increasing frequencies for international routes and adding daily exclusive service to Japan.
“Today's announcement underscores our commitment to affordably connecting Canadians from coast-to-coast to some of the world's most popular destinations,” John Weatherill, Westjet Group executive vice-president and chief commercial officer, said.
Beginning in May of 2024, Westjet will offer a four-times weekly service to Reykjavik (Keflavik), Iceland. It will be the only airline providing direct connectivity to Iceland from Calgary.
“In consultation with local partners, we agreed to announce our intention to begin service to Keflavik in May; we will continue to closely monitor volcanic activity in the region and follow the recommendations of local authorities,” said Weatherill. The service is set to be enhanced by the airline's interline agreement with Icelandair, which will enable guests to travel across Icelandair and Westjet's network via one boarding pass with the convenience of a single check-in, and baggage tagged and checked to their final destination.
“This exciting new route connecting YYC and Keflavik International Airport, Iceland's international hub, provides convenient direct access to the captivating beauty of Iceland, and unlocks more opportunities for travellers to explore and connect with destinations in Iceland, Europe and beyond, as we continue to expand Calgary's global connectivity and ensuring that YYC is a premier international gateway,” Chris Dinsdale, CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority, said in a news release.
After initially being announced in December of 2022, the airline said it will also add more flights to Tokyo, Rome, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Paris, London and Dublin.
Starting April 3, Calgary to Tokyo, which was offered three times weekly in 2023, will now be offered daily.
On March 16, flights from Calgary to Rome will go from five times a week to six times a week.
On April 30, Calgary to Barcelona flights will go from three times a week to four times a week. The same frequency will be offered for Calgary to Edinburgh starting May 12.
Calgary to Paris and London will continue to be offered daily, year round.
On April 29, Calgary to Dublin will be available five times a week.
Westjet will also reconnect three major eastern Canadian cities to European destinations this summer. The news release said services will begin next summer for Toronto to Dublin and Edinburgh, Halifax to Dublin, Edinburgh and London, as well as St. John's to London.
