A school’s greatest asset is its teachers and, given the extensive training and professionalism of the staff at Foothills Academy, it’s no surprise the school was selected as the Gold winner for Favourite Charter/ Private School in the 2023-24 Calgary Readers’ Choice Awards.

“We’re a designated special education private school for students in grades 3 to 12, all of whom have diagnosed learning disabilities, and we work to ensure everyone reaches their true potential,” says

Simon Williams, executive co-director at Foothills Academy. “Our teachers and educational assistants are specially trained and they go above and beyond to meet all our students’ academic, social and emotional needs.”

The staff at Foothills Academy continually receives specialized training to remain up to date with the best practices in learning disabilities and education, says Williams. Teachers also access additional support from other professionals. This can include working with a team of psychologists, intervention experts, literacy and numeracy specialists or occupational and speech therapists.

Foothills Academy’s dedication to its students can be seen when reading testimonials from alumni parents who are forever grateful to the staff for not only assisting their children with academic gains, but also in helping them to add confidence and grow as individuals.

“Our staff teach the full Alberta curriculum and assess and evaluate students with rigour in a comprehensive way that aligns with each student’s learning needs,” says Williams.

“To ensure that all of their individual needs are met means that we make appropriate evaluations to support success and provide interventions and accommodations when needed to help every student succeed.”

Soon to be celebrating its 45th year, the people behind Foothills Academy are proud to maintain their standard of never turning away a student due to financial limitations.

Prospective students and families are encouraged to visit foothillsacademy.org or to call 403-2709400 to learn about the school and the financial assistance offered.
