Canada wins again at Gold Cup

-

Canadian defender Shelina Zadorsky had a night to remember Wednesday.

The 31-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., scored twice from set pieces to help Canada blank Costa Rica 3-0 and remain perfect at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup with three wins and the top seeding heading into the weekend quarterfinals.

The match marked the 50th game in charge of Canada for coach Bev Priestman, who improved to 31-9-10.

Jordyn Huitema also scored for Canada, which outshot Costa Rica 12-1 (4-1 in shots on target).

The three goals all came from headers with 10thranked Canada profiting from its height advantage over the 43rd-ranked Central Americans.

Having won twice already, Olympic champion Canada was assured of making the quarterfinals. But the win over Costa Rica means it finishes with the best record of teams in the final eight.

The two teams will do battle again to open the quarterfinals on Saturday. The other quarterfinals are Brazil versus Argentina, the U.S. versus Colombia and Mexico versus Paraguay.

Should Canada win, it would face either the U.S. or Colombia in the semifinal.

Sarah Schmelzel birdied two of

her final three holes Thursday for a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over three players that included fellow American Lilia Vu at the LPGA tournament in Singapore.

Also tied for second with Vu at the HSBC Women's World Championship at Sentosa Golf Club were Linn Grant and Esther Henseleit. Two-time defending champion Jin Young Ko shot 71. Canada's Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., shot 75.

A judge has upheld a

decision requiring Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to take a paternity test as part of a legal dispute with a 27-year-old woman who claims the billionaire is her biological father.

Alexandra Davis alleged in a separate lawsuit she was conceived from a relationship Jones had with her mother in the mid-1990s.

Attorneys for Jones are challenging the constitutionality of the Texas law that would compel genetic testing of Jones.

The 81-year-old Jones and his wife, Gene, were married in 1963. They have three children, and all have front office roles with the Cowboys. Jerry Jones is the team president and GM.

Davis's original lawsuit claimed Jones “pursued” Cynthia Davis, who was also married at the time, after they met while she was working for American Airlines out of Arkansas.

Their settlement allegedly called for Jones to pay Cynthia Davis US$375,000 and for Alexandra Davis to receive a “certain monthly, annual and special funding” from a trust until she was 21, as well as lump sum payments when she turned 24, 26 and 28.
