Despite medications that eased problems, chronic health issues from a young age meant Lisa Krzyzewski never felt well as she grew into adulthood. Frustrated with the limitations of the conventional health-care system, she was determined to find ways to feel well and began her own research and personal experimentation.

She managed to dramatically improve her health while discontinuing her long reliance on pharmaceuticals. Today, she enjoys a joyful, adventurous and high-performance life, and her success in self-healing fuelled a passion to help others become the healthiest version of themselves. The result was the creation of Aeon Future Health in 2020.

It meant making a bold career jump.

Krzyzewski grew up in Kelowna, B.C., and moved to Calgary in 1999 to make her mark in the oil and gas industry. Most people saw her as a successful business professional and avid outdoor adventurer, but she says she was still living with daily pain and intensified her research — she discovered protocols existed but were not readily available.

Her future business partner and board member, Craig Latimer, shared the research he was doing in longevity medicine, and comparing notes revealed a striking overlap between the latest health interventions for optimal well-being and a link to life extension. Longevity medicine had the same goals as Krzyzewski had — to add healthy, productive years to one's life.

After a couple of years of spirited planning, Aeon Future Health was launched — in the middle of the pandemic — in a clinic on 4th Street S.W., with just four staff.

It became the first clinic of its kind in Canada to use longevity medicine and leading-edge treatment technologies, including AI, in everyday care. Focused on disease prevention and health optimization in addition to conventional treatments, Aeon's medical director Dr. Jonathan Bastian says it fills a needed gap in the health-care system.

“We bridge the gap where conventional medicine falls short,” he said. “True health optimization requires an integrative approach focused on internal processes, from the cellular all the way up to the systems level.”

Immediate acceptance by Calgarians has meant that in three short years the clinic had to search for bigger space. It found it on the second floor of Mark on 10th at 903 10th Avenue S.W. — double the size of its former location — that currently accommodates a staff of 24 who serve a customer base of more than 1,600 and has more than 200 active program members.

Bastian is an active member of the Academy of Anti-aging Medicine and has a focus on men's health and hormone replacement. He has previous experience in palliative care and maintains an ongoing role as an urgent care doctor. Completing executive director Krzyzewski's leadership team are CEO Silvia Bezzi, who joined Aeon from her previous role of chief strategy office at Preventous Collaborative Health, and director of operations Susan Aldcorn, a registered nurse with 20 years of experience in private health care.

The rest of the experienced staff includes medical and naturopathic doctors and nutrition and wellness coaches, specialists in hormone organization, gut health, metabolic health and weight management, cardiovascular health and novel mental-health treatments, including ketamine therapy for anxiety and depression.

The new space also allowed for the installation of new treatment technologies that include AI resistance training using computer-controlled, motorized resistance in place of weights, compression therapy that kickstarts the body's regenerative process, and a Carol Ai-powered stationary exercise bike that in three eight-minute sessions over a week compares with five 30-minute workouts.

They are technologies that have been available to the wealthy and professional athletes, but not made available to ordinary people as part of a supervised medical treatment program.

Krzyzewski says our healthcare system focuses on the treatment of illness rather than disease prevention, and although life span is on the rise, health span is on the decline.

She and her team at Aeon are passionate about helping people feel and perform at their best.

NOTES:

Sorry to see the closure of Eau Claire Market to make way for an LRT station. Former alderman Ray Clark officiated at the grand opening back in 1993, but despite patience and best efforts by Harvard Developments to turn it into a “Granville Island-type” centre, too many restrictions got in the way. Thanks for the effort and good luck with the new site plans.
