This Kitchenaid colour of the year worth its salt

- LAURA SEVERS

Kitchenaid is shaking things up, naming Blue Salt as its 2024 colour of the year.

A periwinkle blue with a subtle iridescent, reddish-pearl finish, the idea behind selecting Blue Salt was inspired by how just a bit of salt can open your senses to new depths of flavour.

“It’s a vibrant shade that pays homage to the limitless potential of the kitchen, inspiring consumers to break the monotony with new ways of thinking, interacting and switching up their daily activities both inside and outside of the kitchen,” said Chadwick Ries, global brand director of Kitchenaid Small Appliances.

“We wanted this year’s colour of the year to accentuate your kitchen design by bringing a new depth and dimension to your dayto-day.”

Blue Salt — inspired by the salt sourced from ancient seas in Iran known for its jewel-like blue hue and subtle, nuanced flavour — is exclusive to Kitchenaid’s iconic stand mixer and can be purchased off the Kitchenaid.ca website. At this time, Ries said there are no plans to extend the colour to other Kitchenaid small appliances as the company has sometimes done in the past with its colour of the year selections.

“The Kitchenaid Colour of the Year is always carefully researched, selected and developed to remind consumers of the power of colour,” added Ries. “This year, we knew we wanted to choose a blue tone because we predicted a resurgence in cooler tones.”

If you want to infuse your kitchen with a dash of Blue Salt, Kitchenaid says the colour will work with any kitchen backdrop.

“You can add a pinch of Blue Salt to any kitchen countertop,” said Ries. “Blue Salt is a periwinkle blue with a subtle yet alluring reddish-pearl finish that softly shifts hues depending on the lighting. As the light changes throughout the day, so do the hues of Blue Salt, making it a versatile choice that pairs well with any tone of kitchen.

“Whether you’re going for a warm and cosy vibe or a sleek and modern look, Blue Salt will reflect the mood of your space and elevate the overall tone and ambience of your kitchen.”

The colour Blue Salt can be blue but can also give off a bit of a purple hue, said Kitchenaid. The colour is meant to ignite positive and fresh new perspectives as it subtly shifts in the light, added Brittni Pertijs, lead colour, material and finish designer for Kitchenaid.

“It’s a subtle sensory reminder to see every day in a new light,” she said.

Kitchenaid’s most recent colours of the year include Hibiscus, Beetroot and Honey.

Hibiscus, the 2023 colour of the year, a vivid fuchsia, celebrated extravagance and free-spirited adventure in the kitchen.

Beetroot (2022, a rich magenta) was about positivity and playfulness, igniting the desire to explore, experiment and expand, while Honey (2021, with golden orange undertones) aimed to reflect a global desire for togetherness with the kitchen as a place of connection.

Kitchenaid has championed the power of colour to fuel creativity since introducing the first stand mixer colours in 1955.

“Each year, the colour of the year represents global trends and poses an opportunity to capture the current moment and inspire makers around the world,” said Ries.

“We want people to slow down and feel excited and optimistic by the whimsical tone (of Blue Salt).”

Colour of the year stand mixers are often purchased by consumers who seek novelty and want to enhance the look of the kitchen with a new pop of colour.

“The feedback we’ve received on Blue Salt has been overly positive with many noting it as the perfect addition to their kitchen, and how it adds a unique touch of individual style,” said Ries.
