Pinterest launches debut colour palette of the year

- MELISSA HANK

Just as the muted tones of winter are blossoming into a riotous spring, Pinterest is releasing its first colour palette of the year. The image-sharing platform says we’ll see gummy pink and moss green everywhere, along with mocha brown, desert orange and aqua blue.

To determine the palette, a creative team analyzed trends from this year’s Pinterest Predicts report and determined key colours in user searches. They then considered trends in industries such as fashion and interior design.

Just like its name suggests, gummy pink evokes a piece of Double Bubble. Pinterest describes it as “dusty pink meets bold blush.” Moss green blends olive with lime green — one of the Pinterest searches that inspired it was “green goddess pasta salad.”

“Moss green is one of my favourites in the Pinterest palette and I think it’s because I’m so immersed in it right now,” Xanthe Wells, Pinterest’s vice-president of global creative, tells Postmedia. “I’m currently planning my kitchen renovation and I’m really drawn to green kitchens — green marble, green cabinets, green tile. It makes the entire space feel warm and inviting by incorporating this rich earth tone.”

Meanwhile, mocha brown is the midpoint between deep caramel and greyish brown. Desert orange evokes the badlands of Arizona, and aqua blue draws on the vibrancy of the ocean.

“There are so many ways for people to bring the palette into their living spaces,” says Wells. “For those looking to add a subtle touch of colour, mocha brown offers an excellent option to introduce a more neutral tone beyond the traditional black or grey.”

Gummy pink and moss green could make a statement in the kitchen, Wells adds. The Pinterest Predicts report showed searches for “retro pink kitchens” were up 40 per cent.

“People are bringing in this colour through tables and appliances,” says Wells.

Aqua blue could make an even bigger impact. Wells says it’s a versatile colour that’s trending in both fashion and decor. For example,

searches for jellyfish lamps rose by 95 per cent, according to the 2024 Pinterest Predicts report released in December.

Overall, the colours are a stark departure from the prevailing palette of the 2010s — all grey and white and modestly minimalist. They represent a shift toward richer, more saturated interiors as well as a celebration of individuality.

“When you view our five colour selections on a palette, it brings a blend of harmony and vibrancy that not only sets the colour esthetic of 2024, but also serves as a visual representation of the trends to come,” says Wells.
