De Rosario and Gayle named to Canadian soccer hall

-

Former MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario and longtime international Robyn Gayle have been named to the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame.

De Rosario and Gayle will be honoured later this year at a national team match. The two join the Class of 2024 alongside builders Christine O'connor and Leeta Sokalski, the first two female administrators honoured by the Hall.

De Rosario scored 20 goals in 81 appearances for Canada from 1998 to 2015, taking part in five World Cup qualifying cycles and five editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

At the club level, he was a two-time Canadian Championship winner, four-time MLS Cup winner, MLS Supporters' Shield winner, and U.S. Open Cup winner.

He was named Canada Soccer Player of the Year four times and won MLS Cup MVP honours twice.

Gayle won 81 caps for Canada from 2006 to 2015, winning Olympic bronze, Pan American Games gold and silver at the inaugural FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship.

She has gone on to become a key member of John Herdman's staff, both with Canada and Toronto FC.

the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday night in New York against the Rangers. The Jets announced Tuesday morning the 69-year-old returned to Winnipeg for a “minor medical procedure.”

Facing a Russia-organized potential rival

to the Olympics, the IOC urged sports and political leaders on Tuesday not to take part in the Friendship Games due to launch weeks after the Summer Games in Paris. The International Olympic Committee denounced diplomatic moves to promote the inaugural event in September as “a cynical attempt by the Russian Federation” to bring politics into sports.

“The IOC strongly urges all stakeholders of the Olympic movement and all governments to reject any participation in, and support of, any initiative that intends to fully politicize international sport,” it said in a statement published during a meeting of its executive board.

Russian President Vladimir Putin decreed last year to start organizing summer and winter events under the banner of the Friendship Games, paying tens of millions of dollars in prize money.

The games aim to counter the country's increasing isolation in international sports.
