Senior living transitions: Insights from Calgary’s Westview Town Suites

Discover how strategic planning and compassionate support make downsizing a positive experience

- ROBIN BRUNET

Retirement communities such as Westview Town Suites in the southwest community of Glamorgan provide more than just homes; they are vibrant communities that support the physical, emotional and social needs of their residents.

But Carrie Larose, senior manager, mixed market housing portfolio for Silvera for Seniors, acknowledges that it’s still daunting for older adults to make the transition to them. “It’s normal to feel stress and a sense of loss,” she shares.

“However, this is also an opportunity to lead a new, meaningful life and build new memories. The key is to make the change a positive experience, and there are many ways to achieve this.”

One of the biggest and most emotionally charged challenges in downsizing

is deciding what to do with one’s belongings. “Once you’ve chosen a community, you should begin packing

strategically,” says Larose. “During this time, you can make decisions about what to keep and what to get rid

of or pass along — and be honest about what you need and can live without.”

Larose suggests optimizing the moving process by using smaller labelled boxes, organized by contents and intended destination within the new residence. Additionally, she advises keeping essential items, such as toiletries and a change of clothes, separate for easy access and using bubble wrap or other soft materials to safeguard fragile belongings.

But arguably the most important thing for downsizers to know is that Westview Town Suites provides support on multiple fronts to facilitate the transition. “We’re here to help, whether it’s by offering financial incentives or organizing movers,” says Larose.

“On a deeper level, we’re also here to help determine what you want to do in your new phase of life and ensure you continue the things you love, whether it’s hobbies, professional endeavours, on-going education or physical pursuits.”

Communities like the newly renovated Westview Town Suites are crafted to support the individual interests of their residents, offering not just a variety of home layouts but also comprehensive services.

“Three daily meals and weekly housekeeping services allow you more time to pursue your lifestyle,” Larose shares. “The suites are pet friendly, guests are welcome and we have a huge variety of on-site and off-site amenities along with a 24/7 on-site staff.”

Deciding to transition into senior living is a challenging and emotional experience, but with proper planning and preparation, it can be a positive one. “It really can be the case of embarking on an exciting new era with a focus on what truly matters,” says Larose.
