Adoption months away for dogs seized by SPCA

Vets continue their assessment process to ensure animals can find new homes

Dozens of dogs seized from a Mountain View County home last week are moving through the animal welfare system, though it could be months before they're ready to be adopted.

On April 23, the SPCA seized 82 “in distress” animals — 56 dogs, 10 sheep, nine llamas, four chickens and three geese — from the rural property. Police also found a slew of allegedly stolen vehicles and other equipment at the property, which resulted in charges against two people.

While the smaller-breed dogs are now in the care of the Edmonton Humane Society — which will manage the adoption process — the SPCA continues to work to find shelters that can take in the larger dogs.

“In most cases, it's expected to take weeks or months for the dogs to be ready for adoption. Anyone interested in adopting a dog from this seizure is encouraged to monitor the Edmonton Humane Society's website,” said Alberta SPCA executive director Leanne Niblock.

Veterinarians continue to assess the animals to ensure they can be placed in new homes. The seized livestock also remain in the SPCA'S care.

“It's important to understand that the Alberta SPCA covers the costs of all animals in our care, including their shelter, veterinary needs and food. Once they 're ready for adoption through a partner, that organization takes over their care,” said Niblock. “We are so grateful for the people who have donated to us and to our partners so we can continue to do this important work.”

This is one of several large seizures the SPCA has conducted recently, with more than 250 animals coming into its care since the beginning of March. Niblock noted two recent cat seizures and other seizures involving large-breed dogs.

The investigation is ongoing, and charges under the Alberta Animal Protection Act are being considered.

Mountain View County is about 60 kilometres north of Calgary.
