Lowry, Fleetwood to tee it up at Canadian Open event

Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood have been added to the field at the RBC Canadian Open.

Lowry is ranked No. 12 on the PGA Tour following his win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on April 28. Fleetwood was the runner-up at last year's Canadian Open, losing to Nick Taylor in a four-hole playoff.

Taylor, from Abbotsford, B.C., was the first Canadian to win the men's national championsh­ip since Pat Fletcher did it in 1954.

Hamilton Golf and Country Club is hosting the tournament for the seventh time this year.

Two-time European weightlift­ing champion Oleksandr Pielieshen­ko died on the front line in the war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Olympic Committee said on Monday. Pielieshen­ko “died in the war with the enemy” on Sunday, the committee posted on Telegram. He was 30.

He joined Ukraine's armed forces in the first days of Russia's invasion, the committee added.

Pielieshen­ko came back from a doping suspension in 2013-15 to win the 2016 European under-85 kilogram division by one kilogram. He successful­ly retained the title in 2017 in Croatia.

Pielieshen­ko missed out on an Olympic medal by five kilograms at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, where he placed fourth. He committed a second doping violation in 2018.

More than 400 Ukrainian athletes and officials have been killed in the war.

WNBA Golden State has named Ohemaa Nyanin as the team's GM, the franchise announced Monday. Nyanin will oversee all basketball operations, inclusive of roster constructi­on, team building and player developmen­t.

Nyanin joins WNBA Golden State from the New York Liberty, where she spent more than five years in a variety of capacities, most recently as the team's assistant GM. The team will begin play in 2025.

The NHL has announced the six finalists for the Willie O'ree Community Hero Award. The award is given to the “individual who, through the sport of hockey, has positively impacted their community, culture, or society.”

One winner each from Canada and the U.S. will be announced in June.

Vancouver's Mark Burgin, Toronto's Mark Demontis and Hamilton's Allen Hierlihy are the three Canadian finalists.

Jerry Devaul of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kelsey Mcguire of Philadelph­ia and Estela Rivas-bryant of El Segundo, Calif., are the three American finalists.

Houston Texans owner Cal Mcnair said Monday receiver Tank Dell will make a “full recovery” after he was wounded in a shootout at a Florida restaurant last month.

Mcnair did not provide details on the nature of Dell's injury, but the team called it a “minor wound” the day after the April 27 shooting.
