The City of Calgary’s green cart collection schedule has been changed to reflect changes brought on as we transition into winter.

According to the City, Calgarians have less yard waste to put in their green carts during the winter months, so the green cart collection will be the same day of the week, but will be every other week.

New collection routes will be in effect so Calgarians are asked to check their new schedule online and have their carts out by 7 a.m. on collection day.

“Calgarians have really embraced the green cart program so we wanted to give them time to get used to composting at home,” explained Laura Hamilton, waste diversion specialist with The City of Calgary. “Now that it’s been a year, Calgarians have been asking us to collect their green carts less often in the winter and the data shows decreasing volumes with less yard waste going into the carts during the winter months.

“So it made sense to make the change to a winter green cart schedule, although it is still important to compost your food waste as well as food soiled paper and tissues.”

There are no changes to blue or black cart collection. Weekly green cart collection will resume in the spring.

Calgarians can sign up for free reminders including phone, email and text alerts or download the free Garbage Day app to receive notifications on their smartphones.
