Entertainment company Cineplex has announced plans to open an adults-only movie theatre in Calgary.

The Toronto-based company, in partnership with West Campus Development Trust, said it will open a stand-alone, adults-only VIP Cinemas theatre in the city’s new University District Development.

Scheduled to open in late 2021, the theatre will be one of only two Cineplex theatres in the country dedicated exclusively to adults, with five auditoriums, luxury recliner seats and a fully licensed lounge.

Movie-goers will be able to choose from traditional concession items as well as an expanded food and beverage menu featuring salads and bowls, burgers, pizzas, desserts, cocktails, wines and craft beers.

“We are excited to be part of Calgary’s new development project as we continue to introduce tailored entertainment experiences in communities across the country,” said Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex, in a release.

“VIP Cinemas is movie-going made for adults and our new theatre will be the perfect destination for Calgarians to socialize with friends and relax in a luxurious and refined setting designed just for them.”

The 21,000 square foot cinema will be located at the intersection of University Avenue and 39th Street N.W.
