WELCOMING CEREMONY

This 1778 illustration by John Webber, entitled A View in Ship Cove, shows British Royal Navy ship HMS Resolution at anchor in Nootka Sound, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Canoes carrying Mowachaht people, part of the Nuu-chah-nulth nation, greet the ship.
