Riel’s legacy minted

A commemorative coin released by the Royal Canadian Mint in the fall of 2019 honours the life and legacy of Manitoba founder Louis Riel while also achieving a new language milestone.

The Manitoba Metis Federation and the Mint unveiled a silver dollar on October 22, 2019, that features a portrait of Riel. The special-edition dollar was designed by Métis artist David Garneau and features an engraving that reads “Métis Nation Leader,” written in English, French, and Michif. The release marks the first time Michif, the language of the Métis people, has been featured on a coin produced by the Mint.
