Monitoring the Chilkoot Trail

-

I read the article on climbing the Chilkoot Trail. (“Conquering the Chilkoot,” February- March 2020). The North West Mounted Police was not the only authority monitoring the trail. In fact, Canada’s customs service had a man on-site. I know this because my grandfather was that customs official. Frank Charman started out as an office boy in the customs offices in Vancouver. In 1898 he was posted to the Yukon, and he remained at the trailhead until the railway was put in and traffic on the trail lessened. It may seem a small point, but I think it is important to acknowledge it. Sonja Sanguinetti Vancouver
