Falcons soar to victory

- — Dave Baxter

This spring marks one hundred years since an underdog group of hockey players from Winnipeg travelled to Europe and returned home with the first-ever Olympic gold medal in ice hockey. On April 26, 1920, the Winnipeg Falcons defeated Team Sweden 12-1 to win gold at the Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. The team was founded in 1911. Its roster was made up of Icelandic players who had not been allowed to join other Winnipeg teams due to ethnic prejudices. Since the victory in 1920, Canadian teams have captured gold in Olympic ice hockey eight more times, including most recently at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
