Canada's History

An overlooked legacy

-

I read your excellent article on the 350-year history of the Hudson’s Bay Company (“An Epic Tale,” April-May 2020). I was dismayed, however, that there was no mention of Peter Fidler and his Cree wife, Mary Mackagonne. You do mention the famous HBC explorer David Thompson and his Cree wife, Charlotte Small, who, like Mary, travelled thousands of kilometres with her husband while mapping thousands of kilometres of territory. Indeed, it is acknowledged that David Thompson received much praise, as he should, while the Peter Fidler and Mary Mackagonne story is often overlooked.
