RIDE IN STYLE
The two above photographs appear in Streetcars of St. John’s, a book by Kenneth G. Pieroway (Flanker Press, 144 pages, $22.95) about the historical means of transportation in the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador. The top image shows Streetcar No. 4 set to begin its journey along Water Street in 1910 with a horse and buggy alongside, while the lower image shows two streetcars at Water Street and Holloway on May 1, 1900 — the first day of operations for the street railway. Some prominent citizens were among the first passengers that day, before members of the general public were given free rides. The book contrasts historical images such as these with recent photographs of the same locations in St. John’s.
