Twelve bucks is about the max­i­mum price din­ers are will­ing to pay for dessert in Toronto, but not at La Banane. The restau­rant’s $50 Ziggy Star­dust Disco Egg—smashed ta­ble­side to re­veal good­ies within—is an In­ter­net sen­sa­tion. The restau­rant sells 20 eggs a night. “I think peo­ple en­joy the idea of hav­ing per­mis­sion to de­stroy some­thing beau­ti­ful, es­pe­cially when you can cap­ture the beauty on a phone be­fore smash­ing it,” says La Banane chef and choco­latier Bran­don Olsen. Pretty colours make for great im­ages: the edi­ble paint is made of cus­tom-coloured co­coa but­ter from Que­bec. —C.M.
