Get the right seat under your seat

Cyclists often look long and hard for the perfect saddle. Once you fi nd the right platform for your posterior, you are set. If you are still searching for the right saddle for your bike, here are some top models.

Fizik Arione 00, R1 and R3

$450 (00), $336 (R1), $224 (R3)

For 2013, Fizik has updated their classic Arione collection with three new saddles: the top-of-the-line 00, the R1 and R3. All three share a new, higher-durometer foam that’s more comfortable and more durable. Each saddle’s shape has also been changed with a slightly wider and more padded nose for increased comfort. As expected, the 00 uses a composite carbon-fibre shell and Mobius carbon-fibre braided rails for further weight reduction. The shell also features a rubberfilled cut-out that helps minimize pressure on delicate tissues. These construction techniques help keep the 00 at around 135 g without sacrificing comfort. The R1 is next in the lineup and offers much of the 00’s performance but at a more accessible price. The R1 uses braided carbon-fibre rails, a carbon-fibre thermoplastic composite shell and a generous amount of padding. The weight for all this is still a feathery 145 g. Finally, there is the more affordable R3. But while the price is lower, Fizik has not compromised comfort or performance. Weighing in at only 185 g, the R3 uses a more flexible fibreglass composite shell, somewhat plusher padding and Kium steel-alloy rails. In a rather odd (for the cycling industry) but commendable move, Fizik continues to offer the original Arione and Arione CX for riders that prefer these saddles. (

Selle Italia SLR Monolink Team Edition

$306

Selle Italia’s Monolink system uses two vertically oriented rails in the centre of the saddle allowing them to build a narrower saddle nose. This width reduction is a benefit for many riders seeking to eliminate unnecessary saddle/ leg friction. The design also permits greater fore-and-aft adjustment that is also useful for riders looking for the perfect bike setup. The saddle itself is typical Selle Italia: well- made with carbon-fibre one-piece rails and 30 per cent carbon injection-moulded shell. While a special seatpost (by Selle Italia or even fsa or Ritchey) is required due to the rail orientation, the benefits the saddle provides may justify the extra investment.

SMP Dynamic Saddle

$ 475 (carbon-fibre rails), $300 (stainless-steel rails)

This made- in- Italy saddle offers riders a number of innovative features that improve comfort and performance. The saddle features a unique curved shape that smp feels better fits the anatomy of most cyclists. smp then adds a massive cut-out along the centre of the saddle that extends all the way to the nose. Not only does this channel reduce pressure on the rider’s delicate areas, but it also allows for increased airflow during long, hot rides. Finally, smp offers the saddle in various widths to better fit different riders’ sit bones. Throw in the option of steel or carbon-fibre rails and riders have a great performance saddle for on- or off-road riding.
