What’s your favourite coffee drink?

My favourite coffee is a toss up between a traditional espresso and a traditional cappuccino. It is definitely hard to choose between the two. Espresso is the best way to showcase the flavourful profile of any coffee bean. When extracted correctly, the three different levels of espresso (crema, body and heart) will make the perfect shot. The traditional cappuccino on the other hand gives you a bit more to enjoy.

Tell me about your café.

Our 2,400-square-foot shop is located in the heart of the popular and vibrant Bridgeland neighbourhood. Bike and Brew’s proximity to the local river pathway system and the downtown makes it an ideal location for anyone looking to explore the city and beyond. By mixing a full-service bike shop and café, we wanted to connect the cultures of cycling and brews (coffee and beer) to create a one-stop shop for everyone.

Tell me about the local cycling scene?

You can sum up the local cycling culture and riding scene in Calgary in one word: eclectic. With Calgary’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains, the mountain biking scene is super strong. The cycling infrastructure in Calgary is world-class, making the road/urban and commuting scene super accessible. Ridership is growing continuously.

Looking ahead to 2020, what’s in store for the café?

Next year is going to be a big year for Bike and Brew. Now that we have the go-ahead to serve alcohol, we are super excited to showcase local breweries on our rotating menu. The addition of our patio will also help people watch the world go by while enjoying a coffee or beer on one of the many bistro-style tables and chairs.

Who’s the most notable cyclist who has stopped by your café?

Probably the most notable cyclists who have stopped by the shop so far have been the all-around, supertalented singer/songwriter and nice guy Michael Bernard Fitzgerald and the queen of spring cycling Kate O’brien. But, to be honest, we appreciate anyone joining us at Bike and Brew, celeb status or not.
