Paris-roubaix hits the cobbles of France. Thirty years ago on April 8, Steve Bauer came into the Roubaix velodrome with Eddy Planckaert and Edwig Van Hooydonck. They sprinted for the line, and it was too close to call. Planckaert or Bauer? It took the race judges minutes to reach a verdict. Unfortunat­ely for Canadian cycling fans, it was Planckaert, by less than a centimetre after 265.5 km of hard racing.

The 74th edition of the Tour de Romandie runs on the roads of the western, French-speaking part of Switzerlan­d. Ottawa native Alex Cataford (p.80) is tentativel­y scheduled to line up for this six-stage race, which is a final tune-up for some riders before the Giro d’italia. Cataford is also hoping Romandie will set him up for the Italian Grand Tour.
