Belgian Waffle Ride North Carolina

-

Why: The Belgian Waffle Ride started in California, but the organizers have put together “unroad” adventures that blend pavement, gravel and serious singletrack across the U.S. In August, a Canadian event was announced. Look for the bwr to run in Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley next May. Over in the east, the North Carolina race is a great option for Ontario and Quebec gravel racers who want to drive to their event and still want to experience something a little different. The party atmosphere at the expo is next level.

WHERE: HENDERSONVILLE, N.C.

WHEN: MID-JUNE

DISTANCES: 212 km, 114 km, 60 km

Best Tech Tip: It’s tough to dial in your equipment for this race. The bike and tires setup that’s ideal for the road descents won’t be optimal for the gravel and singletrack climbs. Think wide range for gearing. Consider a burlier file tread that can roll well on the road but also tackle legit singletrack sections.

Key Feature: The graffiti bridge. If you can, stop and take a photo. Better yet, get a friend to take a photo of you riding through. There are also a few waterfall views along the course that you might miss if you’re focused on speed, but are worth the stop if you’re willing to spend a few extra minutes out on course.

Local Beta: Don’t look for other accommodations: stay at the Kanuga resort, where you can pick from rooms in the inn, cabins or backcountry camping sites. You’ll be near the race start when you wake up, which means you’ll have plenty of time for the waffles and coffee at the expo area before the gun.
