A green frog sits motionless in a puddle on the Steve Bauer Trail in Fonthill, Ont., in the Niagara region. In the spring, puddles on local nature trails can be filled with these and, if hikers pause to listen, the frogs’ low, staccato gunk! call sounds similar to — according to Ontario Nature — “a loose banjo string.”
