Canadian Geographic - Best of 2023

BEST OF 2020

- Geographic Best of Canadian —Aaron Kylie

OOH, WHAT CHANGE a year can bring. We first made this issue in 2017 as a snapshot of our country in its sesquicentennial year. It proved so popular that we’ve published a similar edition ever since. Of particular note this year, there’s the story on Canada’s newest national park, Thaidene Nëné (page 54), from the July/August issue. And in it, this quote from Stephen Nitah, a former Chief of the nearby community of Łutsël K’é: “The prophesy speaks about a time in the future when the economy as we know it collapses, societal structure collapses, food security is non-existent, a great migration of people will be looking to places that have water.”

As we completed work on that story, we had a group of the country’s best photographers capturing how our country had changed in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic (see page 92, from our September/October issue).

That that prophesy was mentioned and then we faced a global pandemic in the same year is an astounding example of what our pages can capture in 12 months. I hope you enjoy discovering the other moments we’ve collected that represent Canada in 2020.
