“This is good for the wild trout populations of Nova Scotia.”
SO SAYS SARAH LEHNERT, a research scientist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, about the results of a study showing that millions of hatchery-raised trout released during the last few decades in the province haven’t bred with wild populations. The twoyear study sampled 1,500 wild brook trout and
200 hatchery trout in 12 Nova Scotia river systems and found that “genetic integrity of the populations remains intact,” Lehnert says.
