A 1946 plan by the Ar­gen­tine govern­ment to cre­ate a fur in­dus­try in Patag­o­nia has led to the beaver de­stroy­ing the re­gion’s wood­lands. The 50 ini­tial an­i­mals have grown to an es­ti­mated 100,000 in Ar­gentina and Chile, where there are no nat­u­ral preda­tors.
