The ap­prox­i­mate dis­tance in kilo­me­tres that a fe­male po­lar bear swam in just nine days in 2009. It was the long­est jour­ney recorded in a re­cently pub­lished eight-year Univer­sity of Alberta study that found re­ced­ing ice lev­els in the Cana­dian Arc­tic are forc­ing po­lar bears to swim 50 kilo­me­tres or more to find food and shel­ter.
