the vicepres­i­dent of re­source de­vel­op­ment at Makivik Corp., the or­ga­ni­za­tion that rep­re­sents Inuit in Que­bec, tells the Nu­natsiaq News how his peo­ple feel about the prov­ince’s plan not to close the sports hunt of the Leaf River cari­bou herd for an­other year, even af­ter it called a drop in the an­i­mal’s pop­u­la­tion “wor­ry­ing.” A 2016 sur­vey es­ti­mated there were 199,000 an­i­mals in the herd, down from 430,000 in 2011.
