In “Kleines Kanada” (July/august), you are correct in pointing out the living legacy of Canada’s Armed Forces bases at Lahr and Baden, Germany. However, life there also made a lasting impression on the tens of thousands of Canadians who lived and worked there. I am a Lahr brat, having lived there with my family from 1975-78. We were immensely proud to be representing Canada’s values in Germany, but we also had a unique view of Europe during the Cold War. We learned that our German neighbours and hosts were not the Germans typically portrayed in the many war movies of that time — they were just like us. My time there provided unique perspectives on the world not possible from Canada. Terry Mcdonald Guelph, Ont.
