July/august 2019 celebrates Louis Riel’s 175th birthday, gets into video game mapping and explores grassland ecosystems

“I am more convinced every day that without a single exception I did right. And I have always believed that, as I have acted honestly, the time will come when the people of Canada will see and acknowledge it.” Louis Riel said this in 1885, the year he was hanged in Regina for his part in asserting Métis sovereignty over a corner of Rupert’s Land (present-day Manitoba and Saskatchewan) during the Red River Resistance (1869-70) and the 1885 Resistance. Today, Riel’s prediction has come true — Canada’s perception of him has shifted from traitor to national hero, and he is recognized as Manitoba’s founder and first premier. In the July/august issue, Darren O’toole, a Métis writer and associate law professor at the University of Ottawa, pens a personal reflection on Louis Riel and his fight for Métis land rights in commemoration of the 175th anniversary of Riel’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the Red River Resistance. Rounding out the issue, Canadian Geographic editor-in-chief Aaron Kylie looks at how video game developers are mapping the places we live, Karen Pinchin profiles Canada’s endangered grassland ecosystem and Leslie Anthony lives on the slopes of British Columbia’s Monashee Mountains while attending the Alpine Club of Canada’s annual mountaineering camp. Together, the stories in our July/august issue explore our ideas of home — wherever that may be.
