The amount by which the world’s seabird population has declined over the past seven decades, says new research from France’s National Centre for Scientific Research and the University of British Columbia’s Sea Around Us initiative. The primary cause? Industrial fishing. “If we don’t do anything,” says Deng Palomares, co-author of the study, “seabird populations are going to collapse.”
