Using a metal detector near what could be the grave of Harry Goodsir, the assistant surgeon of HMS Erebus, the team located a narrow object that was about 30 centimetres long buried about 50 centimetres below the surface. “That could contain a record of what happened,” says Gross, who hopes to return to the site this summer.
