New­sham fire pumper

This New­sham re pumper was built in and is be­lieved to be the old­est de­vice of its kind in Canada. Pa­tented in the  s by Richard New­sham, the ma­chine had levers and trea­dles that pumped water through a metal tank and out of a pipe, shoot­ing a con­tin­u­ous stream of water up to  me­tres to ex­tin­guish res. Nova Scotia’s Shel­burne Cham­ber of Com­merce bought the con­trap­tion in ‚ and used it un­til the mid ‚ s, when it was re­tired from ser­vice.
