VIA RAIL’S CHURCHILL LINE In December 2018, the first passenger train ( RIGHT) in a year and a half pulled into the station in Churchill, Man., which depends on the rail line for supplies and the tourists who make the 1,697-kilometre, 45-hour journey from Winnipeg to see the polar bears that wander the Hudson Bay coasts in the late summer and fall, the northern lights that shine brightest in winter and the beluga whales that crowd the bay’s waters in the summer. Via Rail service resumed after extensive repairs to the track bed, which was damaged by flooding in 2017.
