LEAVING THE LIGHTHOUSE ON
Following a handful of major shipwrecks on the narrowest and most turbulent section of the Jacques Cartier Strait, the first lighthouse was built on Île aux Perroquets in 1888, with Henry de Puyjalon serving as its first keeper.
The island was home to its lightkeepers and their families until the old lighthouse was abandoned in 1978, after the new automated light station was built. The island remained uninhabited for many years, but now the old lighthouse keeper’s living quarters serve as accommodations for visitors, run by the Corporation de l’île aux Perroquets.
