CANADIAN GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE CLASSROOM

-

Beginning in mid-march, schools and businesses across the country were forced to shut down to help control the spread of COVID-19, and Canadians likewise helped “flatten the curve” by staying home and practising physical distancing. The closure of schools placed exceptional pressure on millions of families who were suddenly faced with the challenge of homeschooling while juggling other responsibilities. So, on March 31, Canadian Geographic Education launched its Online Classroom (onlineclassroom.cangeoeducation.ca) to support students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 in finishing the school year from home and to offer fun activities that families can do together.

For years, Can Geo Education has created engaging, innovative and accessible online educational resources for classrooms and its more than 25,000-member network of educators. Can Geo Education is proud to be able to support parents, students and teachers by offering free, bilingual educational activities and materials they can access from home.

Can Geo Education’s Online Classroom also hosts webinars drawing from its extensive archive of educational content (such as what lessons can be learned from the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918), live Google Hangouts with explorers, challenging online trivia and much more.

Staying home is no reason to stop exploring. Can Geo Education provides students with tools that encourage them to learn about the world through an online lens. Students, parents, guardians and teachers can rely on Can Geo Education for quality educational content created by educators to align with curricula across the country and to highlight important issues in our world today, such as plastic pollution and conserving biodiversity.

While the school year is now over, the summer months are some of the busiest for Can Geo Education. New content will continue to be shared weekly on the Online Classroom for families interested in summer learning opportunities and teachers who want to get a head start on building their fall programs. Come September, new content will emphasize hands-on learning for all grades, professional development for educators and exciting new programs that touch on a wide range of geographical themes.
