Riding Beyond Cancer

- BY LISA EVANS

Meet the guys who biked across Canada for a friend

Cameron Lacey, now 19, and Stephen Welsh, now 18, cycled across the country in honour of their best friend, Adam Fedosoff, who lost his battle with cancer at 17 years old.

WHAT DID COMPLETING THE RIDE MEAN TO YOU?

Cameron: Having the privilege of riding Adam’s bike across Canada meant the world to me. He was my best friend, and it was the least I could do to honour his life. Stephen: It was Adam’s dream to participate in the ride, so together Cameron and I carried his ashes from Vancouver to Halifax.

WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART?

Stephen: We were faced with many cold, wet and rainy days and, at times, I wasn’t sure if my legs would be able to turn the pedals. Then I thought about all the kids I was riding for and how they would do absolutely anything to trade places with me, regardless of the weather. This helped get me through the hard days. Cameron: The most difficult part of the ride for me was dealing emotionally with the fact that Adam would have done the ride with us if he were still here.

WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY FROM THE EXPERIENCE?

Stephen: Knowing I have made a difference in the lives of children living with cancer provides a feeling that is simply incomparable. Cameron: Seeing these amazing people come together to do the ride and raise money to fight this disease gives me hope that a cure might be around the corner.
