With all that’s been happening in recent months, this probably won’t be the year that you continue your tradition of that annual July trip to France or Canada Day weekend spent at your university friend’s family cottage; it likely won’t be a year for you to rejoice in the blissful silence of your home while the kids are away for two weeks at overnight camp, either. Rest assured, however, that our nation’s summer still presents a myriad of magical delights—such as the laid-back and low-key offerings on our list of the best things we can (still) enjoy this season.

Spectacular Sunsets Witnessing the colours of the sky change from blue to pink to indigo— after 8:30 p.m.

Watching Your Garden Grow Especially early in the morning, when the air has that misty quality and there’s dew on the grass.

Homegrown Tomatoes So juicy and sweet, from the cherry tomatoes in our Cook the Cover story (page 12) to beefsteak to roma to heirloom. We just can’t get enough!

The Scent of Laundry You know the one—it’s the fragrance that only drying outside on the clothesline can give it.

Beach Reads ’Tis the season for a great book, whether you’re relaxing on the beach, the patio or a park bench. For inspiration, turn to this issue’s Book Club section, starting on page 40, for our recommendations.

Going Barefoot There’s something so freeing about walking around just the way nature intended, feeling the grass beneath your feet and the sand between your toes.

The Coolest Access ories Shades, hat, shoes and bags—we’re all for indulging in a little bit of retail therapy right about now! (Take a peek at our favourite pieces on page 29).

Picnics Fried chicken, potato salad and the proverbial army of ants included, of course.

Easy Exercise When the weather’s nice, getting your 10,000 steps in on a long walk or building stamina on a neighbourhood bike ride never seems like a chore. Check out our fitness story on page 48 for a roundup of workout essentials.

Canada Day We’re so thankful to call this country home, and we know you are, too. Let’s hear it for our true north strong and free!
