NOT SINCE MOSES, FIVE ISLANDS

N.S. July 15, 2018

-

This small Nova Scotian summer ritual is probably the only race in the world that’s entirely dependent on ocean tides. And it’s also your chance to literally run along the ocean f loor.

The Biblically named Not Since Moses hosts both 5k and 10k runs out and around a series of small islands in the Bay of Fundy during low tide. In just six hours each day, 100 billion tonnes of seawater leaves the Bay, creating a muddy yet runnable wasteland.

At its height, the area has the tallest tides in the world. But when the water rolls out, it leaves up to 5k of exposed ocean f loor, like a drenched desert. The route is marked and f lagged by a small army of local volunteers, and runners trudge from one island to the next, sometimes losing a shoe or two. It’s a wild and wholly original race, and not to be missed if you’re out East this July.
