The pe­cu­liar-look­ing spiny soft shell tur­tle is the only fresh­wa­ter ex­am­ple to have a pli­able, leath­ery shell and a long, snorkel-like snout. A strug­gling pop­u­la­tion of lit­tle more than 1,000 can be found on sandy shores in Que­bec and South­ern On­tario — where de­vel­op­ment and pre­da­tion are con­stant threats
