New ban on destructive industrial activity in marine protected areas

The federal government has banned oil and gas activities and bottom-trawl fishing in marine protected areas. This is big news for lots of animals—and also for the many organizations, including the Canadian Wildlife Federation, that had advocated for the ban.

Canada isn’t doing great on conservation

A Canadian author of the bombshell new UN report warning of a human-caused animal apocalypse is calling Canada out for its conservation efforts. They’re “mediocre,” Kai Chan of the University of British Columbia told the Canadian Press. Still, he said, in an op-ed piece for Global News, “the next steps are in motion: reforming environmental impact assessment in Bill C-69, substantially expanding networks of protected areas and strong and nationally consistent carbon pricing.”

Most unwelcome arrival

Chain pickerel, a ravenous invasive species, is overrunning the waters of Nova Scotia’s Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. They’ve been in the park for only a year or so, but they’re wreaking havoc by eating everything in sight, from fish to ducklings.
