Duane Radford
THE AWARD
Created in 1985, this award is named in honour of one of Canada’s greatest outdoorspeople, a nature writer and strong national voice for the recreational use of Canada’s fisheries, Roderick Haig-brown (1908-1976). It recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to furthering the sport of angling and/or the conservation, development and wise use of Canada’s recreational fisheries.
A biologist, a writer, a volunteer, an angler, a hunter and an outdoor enthusiast, Duane Radford has selflessly shared his time, expertise and wisdom throughout Canada for more than 50 years. His lifelong commitment to and love for the natural world informed his 32-year career as a fisheries biologist, research scientist and director for Alberta’s Fish and Wildlife Division just as it did his prodigious writing output. A gifted writer, he received the Outdoor Writers of Canada’s highest recognition in 2017, one of innumerable honours he has received for his passionate conservation work. Radford was nominated by last year’s recipient of this award, Ray Makowecki.
