Jumbo Protection
The Ktunaxa First Nation will take oversight of the Jumbo Glacier area in British Columbia’s Purcell Mountains after decades of legal fighting. Following a Supreme Court decision, the area — which is important grizzly bear habitat — is being declared an Indigenous protected area, with $21 million going to the Ktunaxa to establish the conservation zone. A development company that had intended to create a new ski resort in the area will receive compensation.
