Great Big Scene: Alan Doyle lands another film role in ‘Winter’s Tale’

-

TORONTO (CP) — Great Big Sea singer Alan Doyle has landed another role in a major film — and he’s working with good buddy Russell Crowe again.

Doyle tweeted Wednesday after his first day on set of the upcoming film “Winter’s Tale.”

The 43- year- old says he’ll be portraying a thief in the film from Akiva Goldsman, an established producer making his directorial debut.

In addition to Crowe, the film is also reportedly set to feature Will Smith, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Connelly and William Hurt.

Based on the 1983 novel by Mark Helprin, the fantasy film casts Farrell as a thief — protected by a flying white horse — in 19th century Manhattan who falls in love with a dying girl.

Doyle previously had a role in Crowe’s 2010 vehicle “Robin Hood,” while the two friends also made an appearance together on CBC-TV’s “Republic of Doyle.”

Doyle and the Oscar-winning Crowe have also co-written songs and performed onstage together in the past.

“In some serious company,” Doyle tweeted in reference to the film’s marquee cast. “What a thrill.”

Crowe struck a slightly less upbeat tone when he tweeted on Monday about his own date on set.

“Starting on another film set tomorrow. I need to go home & be with my children. Cannot believe how (screwed) up my schedule has become this year,” he wrote, in fact using an abbreviated version of a more severe expletive.
